Dryer Vent Cleaning Facts:

FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration published a report on “Clothes dryer fires in residential buildings (2008 – 2010)” in August 2012 (the last report filed as of this research). Below are the “findings” of the eleven-page report:
  • 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. 
  • Failure to clean the dryer (34 percent) is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.
  • More home clothes dryer fires occur in the fall and winter months, peaking in January.
  • Clothes dryer fire incidence in residential buildings was higher in the fall and winter months, peaking in January at 11%.
  • Failure to clean (34%) was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings.
  • Dust, fiber, and lint (28%) and clothing not on a person (27%) were, by far the leading items first ignited in clothes dryer fires in residential buildings.
  • 54% percent of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings were confined to the object of origin.
